Could you be a forever family for a Sunderland child? We are looking for families for children for a range of ages - from babies through to older children.

Adoption is a legal way for a child or young person (up to 18 years) to leave one set of parents and get new parents. Legally, it is as if they had been born to their new parents once they are adopted.

If you are interested in adoption, there's lots of information on these pages about our service and we can support you at every step of the way.

Who can adopt?
Single people over 21 years can adopt and married and unmarried couples (including same sex couples) both over 21 years can adopt jointly. People with certain criminal convictions, (mostly offences against children) aren't able to adopt.

You don’t even need to live in Sunderland, as long as you aren't too far away for us to do your home study, give you support and for you to come to information sessions and preparation courses.

How long does it take to adopt?
The process of becoming approved as an adoptive parent should take six months to complete, and runs in two stages – the first includes registering your interest, training and preparation and usually takes around two months. The second stage includes an assessment and takes around four months to complete.

We also provide a range of after adoption support services including helping you to access the Adoption Support Fund.

How can I find out more?

If you would like to discuss adoption with a member of our team, please don't hesitate to contact us or come along to one of our information evenings where you can hear first-hand from adopters and adoption staff about the challenges and rewards of adoption.

Our adoption evenings are held once a month and run from 6pm to 8.30pm unless otherwise stated.
