Foster carers from across Sunderland have been recognised at an awards ceremony to praise their work and celebrate their achievements.
Organised by Together for Children, the event awarded the completion of foster carer’s long service, ranging from five years through to 30 years, and saw more than 50 foster carer’s be rewarded for their dedication and support to Sunderland young people.
This year’s Outstanding Achievement award winners were Penshaw residents Tracy and John Hall, both 45, who care for a young boy with a rare and complex medical condition, supporting him through hospital visits and specialist care.
Tracy and John said of their win: “We feel really proud to have won the Outstanding Achievement award. It’s been great to see the progress he has made – the medication has made a remarkable difference to him and he is much more alert and interactive with people. The little boy we care for really is a part of the family, our own daughters adore him.”
Kathryn McCabe, fostering team manager at Together for Children, said: “The awards are a fantastic opportunity to hear the stories and achievements of our wonderful foster carers. Judging by the success stories we have heard, I’m confident that children in the care of these families and individuals will have bright futures ahead.”
Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, Councillor Louise Farthing, said: “I was proud to be invited to help recognise the dedication and spirit of the foster carers in our city. Their work is so important and it’s great to see Together for Children rewarding them.”
Together for Children, which works on behalf of Sunderland City Council to deliver children’s services, is currently looking to recruit a number of new foster carers. Foster carers are offered financial support to cover the cost of caring for the child and ongoing training and support.
The next Together for Children foster care event takes place on July 17 at Bede Tower, Burdon Rd, Sunderland SR2 7DZ, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. The event is open to anyone wanting to find out more and no booking is required.
