Sunderland Young Achievers' Awards 2020
Celebrating Sunderland's incredible young people - from performers to footballers, carers to volunteers, there is much to be proud of.
This year we celebrated the 28th year of the Sunderland Young Achievers' Awards with an online ceremony held on Friday 11 December. The awards celebrate and recognise the bravery, talent and positive contribution Sunderland's young people have made to the lives of their families and their communities.
Oliver Marshall, aged 11, was named the Overall Winner as well as the winner of the 8-13 years Sport Category. Oliver is a competitive trampolinist, placing third in the UK in the sport in 2019 following which he earned a spot on the exclusive British Gymnastics GB Trampoline Foundation Squad.
Presenting Oliver with this award, the Mayor of the City of Sunderland, Councillor David Snowdon, said: 'I am so proud that here in Sunderland we take the time to celebrate the outstanding contributions that all our young people make. They are a credit to themselves, their families and to the city.'
A host of other outstanding young people from Sunderland were also recognised at the awards across a range of categories including Young Carer, Volunteer, Service to the Community, Music & Performing Arts and Academic Achievement.
Jill Colbert, Chief Executive at Together for Children, said: 'In a year like no other children and young people in Sunderland have once again shown us that their talent, tenacity and resilience shines bright. They deserve all our praise and pride as we celebrate them and all of their achievements".
This year's awards sponsors were Gentoo, Sunderland City Council, Everyone Active, Sunderland Young Carers, Mind of My Own, Councillor Louise Farthing and the R&B Group.
