Pathway for parents

This guide helps parent and carers in Sunderland navigate the Speech, Language and Communication (SLC) Pathway to get the right support for your child at the right time.

Using a Speech, Language and Communication (SLC) Pathway: A guide for parents and carers

A joined up SLC pathway helps parent carers understand how and where to get the right support for your child's speech, language and communication needs. It lays out the steps clearly, so you know:

  1. What to look out for - the key messages and resources help you recognise signs that your child might need support with talking, understanding, or communicating with others. Child Progress Checker - Speech and Language UK
  2. Who to speak to first - it shows you who to contact, such as your child's teacher, local Family Hub, SENCO, health visitor or GP, depending on your child's age and setting.
  3. What support is available - you'll see what help can be offered at different stages, from classroom strategies you might want to discuss with your child's setting, to specialist speech and language therapy that you might want to discuss more with your Health Visitor or GP.
  4. How services work together - the pathway shows how education, health and care professionals are working as a system wide team to support your child.

By following the pathway, you can feel more confident that your child is getting the right help at the right time, and that you're part of the process every step of the way.
