Healthy School Awards 2023
Children and teachers from 17 schools across Sunderland came together recently to celebrate Sunderland Healthy Schools, an initiative that supports schools in the city to establish a positive, healthy school environment.
Organised by Together for Children in partnership with Sunderland City Council, the award ceremony was hosted at Fatfield Academy and celebrated 15 schools who had achieved Bronze status, 1 school achieving Silver status and 1 school achieving Gold.
Schools who received their Bronze Awards were: Barnwell Academy, Blackfell Primary, Burnside Academy, Dubmire Primary, Gillas Lane Primary, Plains Farm Academy, Sandhill View Academy, St Aidan's Catholic Academy, St Anthony's Girls Catholic Academy, St Benet's School, St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, Washington Academy, Willow Wood Community Primary, New Silksworth Junior Academy, Castle View Enterprise Academy.
Fatfield Academy received their Silver award and Ryhope Junior school received their Gold Award.
A group of pupils from each school were invited to represent their school and accept their award on behalf of their peers and teachers from TfC's Simon Marshall, Director of Education Services.
The Sunderland Healthy Schools Award is made up of five Charter Marks: Active, Anti-Bulling, Food and Nutrition, Mental Health, and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and is open to any Sunderland nursery, primary school and secondary school.
Children and young people also got to participate in a range of enriching activities which included:
1. Step challenge
2. Archery
3. Online safety matching game
4. Mindfulness bubbling blowing
5. Anti-bullying fortune teller cube making
The Sunderland Healthy School Award has been developed by a local multi-agency group of health, education and social care professionals to support Sunderland schools to establish a positive, healthy school environment. In addition, the award recognises the dedication of schools within the city to the health and wellbeing of their pupils, staff and local communities.
