Young Carer Award

Young Carer Award

This award recognises young people who have demonstrated exceptional support for their peers, friends, relatives or someone they care about that has helped them to cope with an illness or disability.  This award if for a group or young person who selflessly dedicate their time and energy to caring for a family member or loved one and demonstrates compassion, resilience, and maturity beyond their years, balancing their care giving responsibilities with other aspects of their life. This award recognises their extraordinary contribution, the sacrifices they make, and the inspiration they offer to others through their kindness, strength, and dedication.

Winner: Ellie Storey

Ellie Storey is an extraordinary young individual who has been a caregiver since the age of two. Now 17, Ellie has shown immense dedication and compassion throughout her life. She has supported her mother, who has Crohn's disease, through numerous hospital admissions and treatments, always bringing comfort with her positivity and care.

In 2013, when Ellie was just nine, her brother Shaine was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Ellie became his nurse, attending every appointment and MRI scan. Despite her young age, she provided constant care and support, even now as Shaine deals with memory loss and epilepsy. While attending college full-time, Ellie continues to help him with his daily needs.

Ellie's care giving extends to her Nana, who has COPD, and her Granda, who battled prostate cancer until his passing in December 2024. Her loving presence and support brought comfort to her family members during their most challenging times.

Ellie's selflessness, empathy, and resilience are truly inspiring. Despite the traumatic experiences her family has faced, she remains a pillar of strength and support. Ellie Storey's remarkable contributions make her an inspiration to all.

Highly commended: Nicole Wisniewska

Nicole is a remarkable young lady who is the sole carer for her mother, who suffers from severe mental health problems and physical disabilities. Tragically, Nicole's father passed away when she was just 11 years old, leaving a devastating impact on the family.

As they are Polish, Nicole often translates for her mother, supporting her through numerous appointments and dealing with various services such as housing and Adult Social Care. She also manages the general upkeep of their home. Despite the immense responsibilities she shoulders, Nicole was determined to excel in her GCSEs and pursue further education and is now studying A-Levels at Sunderland College.

Nicole finds it challenging to ask for help but has begun to reach out for support. Before Christmas, her mother underwent back surgery, and Nicole provided significant cant assistance, ensuring everything was in place for her recovery while balancing her studies.

At 17, Nicole does not have the typical life of a teenager. Despite her own grief, she has selflessly cared for her mother throughout her teen years, always with a smile on her face. Her compassion and dedication are evident in the care she provides, all while striving to fulfil her own potential. Nicole aspires to attend university to study medicine. Nicole's selfless, caring, and determined attitude has been instrumental in supporting her mother through the past few years and she truly deserves recognition for her unwavering commitment and incredible strength
