Winner: Ruby Stothard

Now in Year 11, Ruby stands as a powerful example of how determination, courage and resilience can transform a young person's future. Just two years ago, she was at risk of permanent exclusion and struggled daily with decision making, emotional regulation and accepting support. Today, she is almost unrecognisable - warm, charismatic, positive and admired by staff and peers alike.

Her transformation did not come from one dramatic moment, but from a long, brave journey of steady change. Living with hearing loss and moderate learning difficulties, Ruby has had to work twice as hard to communicate, access learning and manage social situations. Instead of allowing these challenges to hold her back, she learned to communicate, to ask for help and to persevere. She now works closely with staff, values routine and structure, and has built a sense of belief in herself that is truly inspiring.

Her kindness extends beyond the classroom. She is a devoted big sister to James and her nurturing instinct reflects the generous and caring young woman she has become. Ruby's progress - from a student in crisis to one flourishing academically, socially and emotionally - is extraordinary.

Highly commended: Josh Bute

Josh is an inspiring young man who has shown remarkable resilience and determination in the face of significant personal challenges. After experiencing mental health difficulties that led to a period of hospitalisation, Josh made the courageous decision to focus on his recovery and begin rebuilding his confidence, independence and sense of purpose.

As part of this journey, Josh started a work experience placement at a local music hub, where he has embraced every opportunity to learn. There, he has developed DJ skills, gained hands on experience with professional equipment and discovered a setting where he truly thrives. His passion for music shines through in his enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to improving his craft. Josh's ambition is to become a DJ or work within the music industry, using his knowledge and love of music to inspire others.

He attends The Cottage as part of his SEND support package, and has become known for his positive influence, friendly personality, deep knowledge of music and willingness to engage and create an uplifting atmosphere. Despite ongoing struggles with anxiety and barriers accessing education, he continues to push himself, be courageous, optimistic and persevere.
